"Which web tools do I need for Direct Sales?"

Inside our AMMO author community, we've been doing direct sales at scale since 2017.

"Direct sales," or "selling direct," or "selling directly to readers," all mean the same thing:

Your readers

buy your books

from your store.

And you keep all the money, after credit card processing fees of approximately 3 to 5%.

You don't share your money with anyone else.

Certainly not that rich guy in Seattle. :)

AND:

In addition to improving your profits, reducing your risk, and diversifying your income...

Direct sales is also the most reliable way to increase your amazon royalties.

(And your royalties from everywhere you're selling your books).

Direct Sales can be extremely profitable.

AMMO Author AJ Vanderhorst sold 115,728 books last year. You can read more about it here.

Othniel Dory and his team sold over a quarter of a million books from their Shopify store last year. You can see Othniel's interview here

Ben & Patty Wallace earned 212K in their first six months as AMMO authors. Patty gives an in-depth accounting of their experience here.

Britt & Laurie-Anne are personal finance experts and nonfiction writers who used our testing and conversion optimization process to gain clarity on what their market really wanted from them. They used this knowledge to grow their business to $400,000 in top line every month, and you can read more about it here.

Gordon Carroll retired early from the police force on the strength of his book sales, and has been a member of our community for years. He talks about his experience on this page as well.

Lee Savino and writing partner Renee Rose write wildly popular "bad-boy romance" novels. They grew tired of only making money whenever they launched a new book, so they used our direct sales program to generate seven figures in backlist sales last year. Lee talks about it with me in an upcoming episode of her podcast (along with Russell Nohelty).

Some of the most respected indie authors use our Direct Sales process:

David Chesson (Kindlepreneur founder), Joanna Penn (author, podcaster, indie publishing luminary, and the force behind The Creative Penn Podcast), Pierre Jeanty (million-selling poet and entrepreneur), Pamela Kelley (over 250,000 Amazon reviews), Rachel Hanna (multi-million-dollar-per-year author), Marie Force (multi-million-dollar-per-year author), Alana Terry (writing coach and bestselling novelist), Naomi Rawlings (million-dollar earner), David Doepker (bestselling author, entrepreneur, and podcaster), Lydia Sherrer (million-dollar earner), AJ Vanderhorst (sold 115,728 books last year), Monica Leonelle and Russell Nohelty (bestselling authors and book marketing coaches), Lee Savino (million-dollar-per-year author), Diane Capri (of the Chasing Reacher series), LT Ryan (million-dollar-per-year author) and many more highly successful independent authors and entrepreneurs are clients and affiliates of AMMO.

BUT:

Direct sales is not easy.

You'll probably need two important things:

This might prompt a question: "Which tools will I need?"

Let's dive in.

In a world with 60,000,000 books available for purchase 24/7/365 at shockingly low prices...

You need to get the word out about your books.

Otherwise no one will ever find them.

Ever.

Seriously, no one.

No matter what Bob down the street tells you about how "good books just find their audience"...

And even if you're the next Hemingway or Austen...

Your books will not magically sell without advertising.

And I can tell you with confidence after millions of dollars in profitable ad spend and tens of thousands of dollars spent testing all the ad platforms out there...

Facebook and Instagram are the best places to advertise your books.

(If you want to sell books at a profit).

They're both better than amazon ads, and better than all of the other digital ad platforms I've tested.

Which is pretty much all of them. Even the weird ones.

And we'll be happy to show you everything we've learned about growing a profitable direct-sales business through FB and IG ads inside of AMMO V4.

So that's Tool Number One: the right advertising platform.

But those ads need to point to a ridiculously effective sales page, which is made possible by the second tool in our arsenal:

The sales page is critical.

It needs to be "dialed-in AF," as my daughter's college friends might say.

(Evidently that means it has to work really well).

Which means that we have to work ON our sales page to get it to work really well.

The average sales page on the Internet converts at between 1.5% and 2%.

Which means that roughly two visitors out of every hundred buy from the average sales page.

But our authors are achieving results that are ten times better.

After optimization, up to 20% of your sales page's visitors will move forward.

The tool we use to achieve these results is a landing page optimization tool called Unbounce.

It's not the cheapest tool on the market... but it is the best tool on the market if your business objective is to sell your books.

We use the "Experiment" plan in Unbounce, and I'll teach you a ton of tips and tricks inside of AMMO V4 to help you get the best results for the least money.

It's easy to tell when your page isn't performing well enough.

But it's harder to know WHY.

We need more information to understand which specific parts of our page are scaring our would-be customers away.

So we use a tool called Mouseflow to show us how users interact with our sales pages.

They have a free starter plan, and that's what you'll choose if you decide to start selling directly to your readers using our process.

Mouseflow allows us to really get inside the minds of our page visitors, which allows us to make our pages better for them.

When we invest the time and care to understand how better to serve our customer, they have a better experience with us.

And this means they'll buy more of our books, which is a win-win scenario.

They get a great reading experience at a great price...

And you get to live the life you've dreamt of living, writing books for eager fans to enjoy. :)

When our new customers click on the "BUY" button on our pages, they'll be taken to the hub of our direct sales business: our store.

But we can't choose just any old ecommerce store.

We need to use the best one.

We use Shopify as our ecommerce store provider for a long list of reasons, not the least of which is this one:

Shopify's checkout boasts the highest conversion rate of any ecommerce checkout system.

And authors who sell their books on Shopify earn more money than authors who sell their books on any other ecommerce app.

We'll show you how to set up your products, pages, and integrations to make your Shopify store work seamlessly to grow your fan base.

And you'll be pleasantly surprised at Shopify's affordability.

You'll also be pleasantly surprised at how thoroughly and seamlessly our next tool integrates with your Shopify store:

It's not news that email is one of the most powerful tools on the planet for authors and business owners.

Email has literally made millions of dollars for me, and I'm definitely not unique in this regard.

But not all email systems are created equal.

Most of them are kind of terrible at bringing customers to buy from our ecommerce stores.

But Klaviyo was designed from the ground up to integrate perfectly with your Shopify store.

Hands down, Klaviyo is the best email service provider for your direct sales business.

This is because it operates completely differently from "normal" email platforms.

Klaviyo is 100% focused on your customer experience, which allows you to send the right message to the right customer at the right time.

Result: More happy customers, more sales, and more goodness overall on Planet Earth.

:)

So those are the main tools that power the AMMO Direct Sales System, which is responsible for $25M+ per year in book sales:

  • Meta for our ads
  • Unbounce for our sales page optimization
  • Mouseflow for our customer experience insights
  • Shopify to sell our books and merchandise
  • Klaviyo to turn customers into superfans
