For Authors and Musicians: The Anatomy of a Successful Creative Business
Most creative professionals despise the thought of spending time on the business end of things.
Some of them hate the idea of being ‘mercenary’ about their art.
Others have convinced themselves that they ‘don’t have a mind for business.’
Still others have developed unhealthy beliefs around money.
But every author I know wants to be read.
And every musician I know wants to be heard.
Here’s the reality: there’s no way to make an impact with your art unless you’re willing and able to build a viable business around it.
These days, lightning doesn’t strike. Quality books and music just don’t bubble up to the top of the charts miraculously. That old myth — if your books or music were good enough, they’d already be selling — is long dead. The reality is that there are 10,000,000 books for sale today, and upwards of 30,000,000 songs.
Nobody is going to ‘discover’ you on the merits of your work alone.
Unless you’re methodical and professional about your marketing, nobody will even know you exist.
If your books or your music are solid, professional, and approachable, the #1 predictor of your success is your marketing system.
There are three things that your marketing system must do.
If your system does these three things, there’s almost nothing that can stop you from becoming extremely successful.
If your system DOESN’T do these three things, there’s almost nothing that will allow you to become successful.
