Here’s how I built the book ads that changed my life and career.

I started by brainstorming ten headline ideas for my ads. I followed a specific recipe from my business career to make these headlines as effective as possible.

Then I put each of these headlines in a special kind of advertisement on Meta that serves as an experiment.

I ran this experiment over a couple of days at a low budget.

When the results came back, thousands of readers in my market had unknowingly rank-ordered my headline ideas from best to worst.

(Don’t worry if you’re not a thriller author. This works in every genre and works in nonfiction as well.)

I checked the numbers on the best ones to make sure they were good enough. I have some criteria for this from my 21+ years in digital commerce, and it’s pretty easy to tell what’s working.

It turns out in this case that four of these headlines were good enough to use in my ad campaign.

I used the same process to pick my ad images and the text in the primary post description area of my ads on Meta.

When I was done, I had a group of ads that helped me quit my day job.

That was seven years ago.
